In 1965, with three children under 2 years of age, I took up weaving to save my sanity.  It gave me an afternoon off to take lessons and be with other adults.  Well, it not only saved my sanity, it became a love affair which has filled my life with pleasure.  It has opened my eyes to many things - noticing color, texture, warmth, coolness, etc, - how to conduct a business along with raising a family of five children, how to brighten a dull dreary day with beautiful yarns, but above all, it has made me feel so lucky to have found something I love so much.

Weaving gives me energy.  It inspires me to keep going.  It instills in me a sense of peace.  It makes me happy.

To be able to sit at the loom and watch the colors emerge as I throw the shuttle back and forth is so enriching.  It allows me to plan the next color scheme or project.  It gives a great sense of accomplishment when I pull the yards of fabric off the loom, and then begin planning what I will turn that fabric into.

In weaving, two threads, often of different colors, come from different directions.  When they meet they form a new color and texture and a new cloth is begun.  The interlacement of the threads makes each individual one stronger.  A union  of threads and colors working together to form fabric that grows larger and stronger as the work progresses.

To be able to clothe ones self and others from what began in my studio as a cone of thread is very exciting.  Cloth is basic to life.  It provides warmth, protection, and comfort.

One of my favorite exercises is to pick a flower from my garden, take that flower into my studio and use it as a color study for a piece of fabric.  Going through my shelves, picking as many cones of yarn in colors from that glorious blossom as I can find, working with the shading and proportions - it leaves me with a sense of wonder at the beauty in the world.  To then take the cloth that emerges with all those colors in it and make a piece of clothing for someone to wear is so satisfying.

In my current work, I am combining my own hand woven fabrics with fabrics I have collected in my travels around the world.  Each of these fabrics becomes an element in the garment created.  These collected fabrics often have additional elements woven into them.  In South and Central America, the woman’s blouse has images woven in that tell the family history.  They may be woven in colors that have a special significance to the village the weaver lives in: images can tell a story, indicate a prayer, or record the family history.  This is the language of their fabrics.

I weave to create rich, deep colors and textures.  I weave to make things.  I weave to feel full.  I weave to get inspiration.  I weave because I love it.
