Artist’s statement
Everyday objects, materials, and light inspire me. I find it gratifying to start with some mundane bit of material and transform it into something aesthetically pleasing. This is what drives me to collect plant fiber from my yard for papermaking rather than consider it yard waste and to scour the local metal scrap yard for steel I can use in my work.
The nature of these materials forces me to think in a very ‘transformational’ way. When I look at my raw materials, I start to envision a shape, texture, or composition. Then I start transforming the materials to match my vision. This includes preparing paper fiber by cooking, beating, pigmenting and adding small textural fibers. Then I create the final paper through sheet forming techniques, pouring the pulp, and even spraying it through a sand blaster. I work my metals in the blacksmith’s forge, by welding and braising, and finish them with metal patinas to add color to the surface. I also use some very non-traditional processes such as knitting metal wire.
The resulting work is typically mixed media and often includes light. Although I create some two-dimensional pieces, three-dimensional works are my real joy.
